Photographing Sonic Booms and the Like


In doing some web surfing, I came across something very interesting: Schlieren Photography.  What is that, you ask?  The technical definition is "a visual process that is used to photograph the flow of fluids of varying density or air around an object".  In laymen's terms, it is the process of photographing light when it is being distorted by air.  Check out the demonstration in this YouTube video from the Discovery Channel:
